“Sons of Tucson” – new Fox show

I just watched the premiere episode of this show and thought it was pretty funny. It’s about a guy named Ron Snuffkin, played by Tyler Labine, who works in a sporting goods store but in a slacker-type job. He’s sort of like Chuck from the show “Chuck” who works at the Buy More – but Chuck is really very sharp and has a lot going for him. Ron is not sharp and has nothing going for him presently. He lives in his car and smells bad. But along come the Gunderson boys who live alone in a big, beautiful house who need a father to be present at their school to register them. Their dad is in prison for some white collar crime and their mom is out of the picture. So they come across Ron, check him out and decide he’d be ok to take the job. He eventually agrees to it when they offer some money which does the trick.

He goes to the school, meets the very attractive teacher, Natalie Martinez, and eventually gets the registration done. The dialogue in this show is funny, and the teacher has some good lines. When Ron asks what she’s doing, she says she’s transcribing the history of papier-mâché because the computer is broken so she’s doing it by hand. When he asks about her house she answers, “I’m a teacher. I don’t have a house.” I liked that.

The boys are regular kids and the youngest, Robby, is eight. He’s hard to handle, but you can see he’s coming around to the fake dad. Brandon is 13 and Gary is 11 and they’re always needling each other. Ron moves in and I’m sure there will be many crazy experiences in the future. It’s sort of like “Malcolm in the Middle” except there’s no mom. It’s not easy for Ron to adjust to living in a nice house with three kids, but he’s doing his best. Now he can bathe and even watch television. It will be interesting to see if this lasts as “Malcolm” did. I hope so.
