I'm A Patsy - Gotta Problem With That?

Good News/Bad News

In a recent “Time” magazine there was a lot of information on aging. The first part was good in that it gave many ways to increase our years. It said that centenarians born in the late 1800s are growing in numbers. They went through the flu pandemic of 1918, the Great Depression, both world wars and are still here and are keeping up with current events. Health officials think that by 2050, more than 800,000 Americans would be going into their second century of life. These centenarians are not what you’d expect. They’re not sick and housebound; they’re still mentally alert, not disabled and active members of their communities. Why can’t we all be like they are? Only about 30% of aging for most people is genetically based. So that means we have to do something about the 70% which would mean exercising, eating well, not smoking, keeping your mind active – in other words, stop lying around and getting busy on staying healthy if you plan to live to 100. There isn’t going to be a “youth” pill anytime soon, so we should get back what we lose when we live a modern, overfed, overstressed and underactive lifestyle. That’s easier said than done.

And then comes the second article on aging by Jeffrey Kluger. The title is “Be careful what you wish for. We’d all like an extra decade of life. But there are reasons to think we already hang around long enough.” What a downer! The U.S. has 39 million people over 65 – just about 13% of the population. In 2011, the leading edge of the 76 million baby-boom generation – born from 1946 to 1964 – will become 65, and they won’t stop coming until 2029. If we think Medicare is in bad shape now, think what it will be like then. And just because you may stick around until age 90 doesn’t mean you’ll be in good shape. A Rand study made in 2005 took four risk factors for health – hypertension, obesity, diabetes and smoking – and tried to figure the cost effect if these conditions were eliminated or partly eliminated among the elderly. They found that eradicating hypertension and cutting obesity would save Medicare much money. However, completely controlling diabetes would increase spending by $246 billion, and eliminating smoking would boost costs by $293 billion. You don’t even need to ask why as the answer is simple: Because diabetes and smoking cut off more years of life than hypertension or obesity. So I guess if we don’t take care of diabetes and keep on smoking, we’re helping the economy.

Another aspect of living longer is the fact that more aging people are now moving in with their baby boomer kids. This is what is called “boomerang seniors.” That group has risen 50%. The baby boomers may still be taking care of their own kids which doesn’t make for a pretty picture. And also, if these aging people are still healthy, they may still be working and keeping baby boomers and young people from getting jobs. If the healthy oldsters are working at fast food places or Wal Mart, they could be keeping high school kids from jobs and saving for college. Scientists are also thinking that possibly eating less food and getting our caloric content down might help. It works in animals – I don’t know just which animals, but mice are always scurrying around with tumors or dementia and then fixed with some new medication. I think mice are used in experiments 24 hours a day. Maybe that’s why I haven’t seen any mice lately – they’re all at the lab someplace.
I don’t know how they would get the majority of the population on some sort of diet when they can’t seem to stop obesity.

After reading all the articles, I was encouraged and then depressed which is what I usually go through in a day - it’s nothing new for me. So I decided to go for a walk and get some exercise. I wish it were something I could do maybe once a week instead of every day. I never liked exercising.

“Sons of Tucson” – new Fox show

I just watched the premiere episode of this show and thought it was pretty funny. It’s about a guy named Ron Snuffkin, played by Tyler Labine, who works in a sporting goods store but in a slacker-type job. He’s sort of like Chuck from the show “Chuck” who works at the Buy More – but Chuck is really very sharp and has a lot going for him. Ron is not sharp and has nothing going for him presently. He lives in his car and smells bad. But along come the Gunderson boys who live alone in a big, beautiful house who need a father to be present at their school to register them. Their dad is in prison for some white collar crime and their mom is out of the picture. So they come across Ron, check him out and decide he’d be ok to take the job. He eventually agrees to it when they offer some money which does the trick.

He goes to the school, meets the very attractive teacher, Natalie Martinez, and eventually gets the registration done. The dialogue in this show is funny, and the teacher has some good lines. When Ron asks what she’s doing, she says she’s transcribing the history of papier-mâché because the computer is broken so she’s doing it by hand. When he asks about her house she answers, “I’m a teacher. I don’t have a house.” I liked that.

The boys are regular kids and the youngest, Robby, is eight. He’s hard to handle, but you can see he’s coming around to the fake dad. Brandon is 13 and Gary is 11 and they’re always needling each other. Ron moves in and I’m sure there will be many crazy experiences in the future. It’s sort of like “Malcolm in the Middle” except there’s no mom. It’s not easy for Ron to adjust to living in a nice house with three kids, but he’s doing his best. Now he can bathe and even watch television. It will be interesting to see if this lasts as “Malcolm” did. I hope so.

“Human Target”

I watched this Fox show again the other night and still like it, but I have a few suggestions. I think Mark Valley is very good and mysterious – he always gets the job done protecting people. However, I think some of his fight scenes in hand-to-hand combat are too violent and too long. They could be shortened a little and that would give more time to Jackie Earle Haley whom I think is such a good actor. His dialogue is perfect, but there should be more of it. He is so quirky and a little weird which makes him so much fun to watch. He’s very smart and always helps Mark get out of bad situations. Mark has a secret from his past that Jackie knows, and he’ll protect Mark from any harm. He’s not actually part of the team with Mark and Chi McBride, who runs the show, but he’s always called upon when they need help which they always do. Am I becoming a Jackie Earle Haley stalker? Possibly so. So please give him more to do and more crazy things to say.

Is anyone listening to me???

Teri’s having a birthday!!!

Every time I look at this picture I feel good – it makes me happy because Teri looks so happy as she starts off to school - dressed warmly at my insistence, of course - and carrying her Barbie lunch box. Who wouldn’t be happy? It makes me realize how much things change as time goes by. Now Teri doesn’t carry a lunch box on her way to work – not even a paper bag because I don’t think she eats lunch. She doesn’t wear a kerchief or sensible shoes, and the friendly bus driver isn’t waiting for her to board. Instead, she travels underground to the dirty, scary subway to get to work in Manhattan. What a life! I wonder if she looks as happy boarding the subway as she did her school bus. But childhood doesn’t last forever. Then we all had parents worrying about us and making sure we were warm, fed and healthy. No wonder we were always smiling! I’ve had her picture out for a while, and I keep looking at it. It makes me feel good.

Teri’s coming to visit me next week, and I can hardly wait. She’s also going to visit Cindy for a couple of days after she leaves here. That will be a wonderful time for both of them. Teri has duties as the Godfather of I ETA PI sorority, and since she missed the grand opening of Cindy’s Brownie Morrison shop, she’ll make her appearance there on the 19th and 20th of February. Stop in and meet the Godfather!

So, happy birthday, Babe. Maybe your office will throw you a big party! Or maybe not. But remember, your mom loves you lots and lots.

Super Bowl and Focus on the Family

I was planning on watching the Super Bowl Sunday, but now will definitely not be watching. I can’t believe CBS is showing an anti-abortion “documentary” about Tim Tebow and his mother, Pam. Focus on the Family is obviously a conservative group and will be telling the story of how Pam and Bob Tebow traveled to the Philippines when Pam was pregnant with their fifth child. Why would anyone travel to the Philippines when they’re pregnant . . . why would anyone travel there in the first place? And why would anyone have 5 children? While there, Pam caught an amoebic dysentery, and the medicine she took threatened her unborn child. The doctors recommended an abortion, but Pam refused and later had Tim who apparently was fine.

Now that’s a good story, but not one for the Super Bowl. It’s anti-abortion and that’s not the proper venue for their story. It’s not a political rally, it’s just a damn football game with a lot of drunken fans watching and cheering at the game and at home. It’s bad enough fans have to sit through many erectile dysfunction ads and the relatively new ads about sexual satisfaction for men and women with the new products . . . and always with sound effects at the proper moment. But the Tebow ad is just too much. I refuse to watch the game and won’t. I know one person isn’t going to help my cause, but it worked when I refused to watch Jay Leno when they put him on at 10pm and made the dramatic shows skitter around for a time slot elsewhere. I didn’t watch one show and his ratings were in the toilet. So, don’t let it be said that one person can’t make a difference. I’m hoping I can.

“Human Target”

I watched the Fox show “Human Target” last night and loved the ending! I burst out laughing even though someone was shot and killed! Jackie Earle Haley was the shooter, and what happened surprised me . . . a lot! I don’t know too much about Haley, but I love his acting. He looks like some kind of quirky, nerdy guy who maybe doesn’t have too much going for him, but he always gets the job done in his own way which I like. Mark Valley is the guy with all the action – much fighting, kicking and just plain rough-housing. Chi McBride is the head of the group and does a good job of keeping things going. Things don’t always work out the way he wants, but they always get done. And it invariably seems to come down to Haley doing something that is the finisher.

I wrote about this show a month ago, but I just had to write again after watching last night’s episode. The ending just blew me away! Let’s have more of Jackie Earle Haley.
